Action Items
Review the grading rubric (below) for this assignment.
Review Chapters 13, 14, and 15 before completing this assignment:
Go to the discussion topic, “Company Assignment” in Company Analysis, to determine which team you will be working with on this assignment.
Contact your fellow team members and determine when and how you will meet to share and discuss the individual findings of each person (Company Analysis). This meeting can be done through email or using Skype for Business.
Review the information gathered on your company and industry with your team (Company Analysis).
Work as a team to complete the following:
Investigate the growth potential of your assigned company. There is not necessarily one single right answer, but you are to support your position. Consider global growth and entry into new products/technologies. Consider the industry growth projections and what that means to your company. Can they keep up? Are there any apparent new threats or opportunities?
Determine the competitive advantage of the target company. Does it have a cost advantage, marketing advantage, and/or differentiation advantage? To what degree do you think this impacts profitability, and why?
Research the target company and industry in respect to sustainability, innovation, and globalization. What is the impact to costs of each of these areas? What might it mean to future sales and profitability? How important are these aspects to your customers and end-user consumers? Keep your discussion of costs conceptual – high cost, low cost, short-term costs, long-term costs, etc. – rather than actual dollars or projections.
Determine the company and industry ratios. Use the Ratio Template document to assist in this process. Once the ratios have been determined, the team needs to discuss the ratios. What stands out? Where are the trouble spots and where are the opportunities?
The Ratio Template document contains three worksheets:
The Ratio Interpretation worksheet explains how to interpret the ratio in regards to your company’s standing in the industry.
The Ratio Formulas worksheet explains how to calculate the ratio or where to obtain the ratio.
The Competitors Ratio worksheet is the worksheet that the team will need to fill in with the necessary data.
Company and Industry ratios are located at Money Central @msn.com. Instructions for accessing key ratios at Money Central:
Access https://moneycentral.msn.com/home.asp
In the search box, type in the desired company name or stock symbol.
A few companies with similar names may pop up, so select the correct one.
When you land on the company information screen, look to the left-hand menu.
Under the header ‘Fundamentals,’ select ‘Financial Results.’
Then select ‘Key Ratios.’ There are seven sub-menus listed directly under the company name in the center portion of the screen (the sub-menu items include: Growth Rates, Price Ratios, Profit Margins, Financial Condition, and so on).
Looking through these ratios, find the ones you need to complete the Excel template provided. Fill in your company’s key ratios and those of the industry. Ignore the column that says S&P 500.
As a team, create a 3- to 4-page business report on your assigned company. Use the format on pages 406-420 as a template for your report. The report will be submitted to the Vice President of Acquisitions for your organization. The report is to address the following items:
Description of the company’s growth potential.
Highlights of the good, bad, and ugly points from your competitive ratio review.
Description of the company’s competitive advantage.
Description of the key aspects of the industry and your company with respect to sustainability, innovation, and globalization.
Summary of the company’s overall position with respect to these competitive elements.
Make a recommendation if your organization should buy this company or not. Provide a rationale for your recommendation.
Check your business report using Grammarly.com. Modify your business report as needed.
Submit your business report to turnitin.com. Only one team member is to submit to turnitin.com.
Read the Originality Report you receive from turnitin.com and make any modifications as needed to your business report. This may include adding proper citations or better paraphrasing.
Work as a team to create a one-page handout of the key points of interest about the company that will be shared with other project teams that have been exploring other companies for potential purchase by your organization.
Include the following as appendices to your team’s report:
Competitors Ratios Data (See Company Analysis on how to import the Excel document into your report)
Handout
Come to your scheduled class session ready to discuss your company. This will not be a formal presentation, but a round-table discussion among the project teams to share information about each of the companies.
