Your response to each prompt should be roughly 3-4 double-spaced pages, so the entire exam will be 6-8 pages. It will be helpful to approach each essay not just as providing an answer to a question, but rather as showing off what you have learned and how thoroughly you can think through the relevant issues in writing. If you are concerned about the quality of your writing, talk to me or consider working with the Writing Center. You may also show me an essay and receive suggestions for revision if time allows.Your essay will be graded according to the following criteria: how effectively it responds to the question the degree of familiarity with and critical thinking about the course and assigned readings it reflects how clearly and thoroughly it explains important concepts and the connections between them how effectively it uses direct references to course texts, including direct quotations and paraphrasing the clarity of organization and compositionQUESTIONSIn what ways does a societys ethnopsychology (including understandings of the mind, body, personhood, etc.) along with other aspects of its culture shape the ways in which mental health and illness are understood and treated in that society? In what ways, if at all, should understanding of ethnopsychology and culture more broadly be incorporated into the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness? In Unnatural Emotions, Catherine Lutz writes, This book attempts to demonstrate how emotional meaning is fundamentally structured by particular cultural systems and particular social and material environments. The claim is made that emotional experience is not precultural, but rather preeminentlycultural (5). Drawing on Lutz and at least two other course texts, evaluate Lutzs argument. How cultural and social are emotions? Are there universal basic emotions? How different are the emotional experiences of people who have been enculturated in different societies?RubricTake-Home Final ExamTake-Home Final ExamCriteria Ratings PtsThis criterion is linked to a Learning OutcomeEssay responds effectively to the questionDoes the essay address the issues raised in the question?
