There are two sections on this exam.
Section 1: Essay response, answer one question, worth 50%.
Section 2: Essay response, answer one question, worth 50%.
Total points for this exam = 100
3 pages (max) double-spaced for EACH response, times 12 new roman font
You MUST answer one essay question from each Section.
You must have one cover page with both responses stapled together,
with your bibliography at the back. Each essay response must have three academic references,
these can be books or journal articles. You do not have to separate your references, but rather
you can just construct one single bibliography for both essays, using 6 separate sources (3 for
each).
Do not use point form.
Each response must have at least three anthropological sources.
Section 1 (50%) 3 or 4 pages Double-Spaced:
Answer one of the following essay questions with reference to its anthropological significance.
1. Define and describe linguistic anthropology. What are some of its subfields and what
social information can anthropologists gain from studying language? (you may focus on
any given part of this question).
2. The anthropological study of religion/spirituality is a complicated and often difficult
process. What information on society can anthropologists gain from research into
religion/spirituality?
3. What is archaeology and what are some of the methods and theories that archaeologists have used to interpret the archaeological record?
Section 2 (50%) 3 or 4 pages Double-Spaced:
Answer one of the following essay questions with reference to its anthropological significance.
1. Describe one or more of the subsistence systems human societies practice and explain
the role of subsistence may have in structuring other aspects of society (EG kinship,
marriage, residence pattern).
2. Anthropology is renowned amongst the social sciences for the holistic nature of its
approach. Explain how this holism, and the four-field structure of anthropology,
combine to form the “anthropological perspective”.
3. Describe the ethnographic approach as practiced by cultural anthropologists. What are
the main principles of ethnography and what are the specific challenges in describing
other cultures? This response must include reference to a cultural group and an
anthropological theory.
