You are going to read 3 articles:

2. “Harlen – Ch1”
3. Crismond-Taking Engineering Design Out for a Spin.
1). DF# 1: Read “Drayton – Darwin’s Journal”
In his 3-page article, Brian Drayton uses Charles Darwin and the journals he kept back in the early 1800s as a case study to illustrate how teachers might benefit from keeping a journal of their classroom experiences and teaching. After you finish read this article, pick ONE of the discussion points below and do an “original thread” on it. Please write the title of your posting, and the Discussion Point # (noted below) that you address.
Discussion Point # 1: In pages 19-20, Drayton discusses three “qualities” of Darwin’s notebooks that he has found useful in his teaching and own research: diversity, freedom, and cultivation. Give your own rank ordering of the value of these three features — from most to least. Give a rationale for your ranking. Include in your thread examples of how you see that feature working in your own learning and teaching.
Discussion Point #2: Who was Charles Darwin the naturalist and what “big ideas” did he contribute to the world of science (put your prior knowledge to good use while also summarizing external references to complete your story)? What specific examples of recent discoveries or theories that have built upon his work done? Which of the 7 process skills of scientific inquiry that you investigated during our first meeting are at work in Drayton’s descriptions of Darwin’s actions and thinking?
Discussion Point # 3: Describe 3-4 specific diary- and journal-keeping techniques that Charles Darwin used to get the most out of his journal writing. Then tell how you have used these techniques in your own past, or might you them in the future, and which you think might be most applicable to a journal you might keep as a teacher. Please give explanations the positions you take.
Discussion Point # 4: First describe what were some short-term goals that Darwin wrote and used his journals for, followed by one ultimate purpose (page 18)? Then, reflect on what might be the short-term and ultimate purposes for you in keeping a teacher’s journal. What are some similarities and differences between you and Darwin keeping a journal?
AFTER write the original thread, please provide a “meaningful response” to different Discussion Point. In writing that reply, you might: (1) carry an idea further; (2) offer another perspective on the point; or (3) apply it to a different context (including your own teaching).
2). SN#1: Read “Harlen – Ch1”
(a) Notes on Your Own Learning – Summarize in your own words the key ideas
from the assigned task (reading an article).
(b) Implications for Teaching – Describe how you might apply the ideas you
learned from the assignment to your future teaching.
3). SN# 2: Read Crismond-Taking Engineering Design Out for a Spin.
(a) Notes on Your Own Learning – Summarize in your own words the key ideas
from the assigned task (reading an article).
(b) Implications for Teaching – Describe how you might apply the ideas you
learned from the assignment to your future teaching
