ADDITIONAL CASE 1: Selecting Project-Management Software
You work in the proposal department of Allied Marine Services, a small manufacturer of electronic equipment used in civilian and military boats and ships. Currently, your company does not use project-management software in creating its Gantt charts; instead, a graphic artist draws them. You think that project-management software might help you complete the charts more quickly and less expensively. You ask your supervisor if he will let you spend a few hours searching the Internet to learn about the software: what kinds of programs are available, what they do, how easy they are to use, and what they cost.
To complete this case, perform the following tasks:
1. Study Chapter 16 on proposals.
2. Using a search engine, find the sites of three manufacturers of project-management software. Review a few pages from each site and learn about the software.
3. In a 1,000-word memo to your supervisor, describe the different products and recommend whether your company should download demo copies and try them on its next proposal. (See Chapter 14 for a discussion of memos.)
4. Attach a Works Cited that lists the sites you visited.
ADDITIONAL CASE 2: Writing Proposals to Different Audiences
Chapter 16 in your textbook discusses proposals—offers to carry out research projects or provide goods or services in exchange for money or other resources. The examples in the textbook demonstrate the strategy of writing to for-profit organizations such as companies. But proposals are often addressed to nonprofit organizations, such as philanthropies or government agencies. In this case, you will compare the strategies used in writing proposals to nonprofits and to for-profit organizations. Then you will write a memo presenting your findings.
To complete this case, perform the following tasks:
1. Study Chapter 16, paying particular attention to the section called “Persuasion and Proposals.” In addition, review Chapter 8 on persuasion, because the heart of proposal writing is making a persuasive case.
2. Study the Foundation Center’s Proposal Writing Short Course. Compare the strategies of writing to for-profit organizations (as discussed in your textbook) and to nonprofit organizations (as discussed in the Proposal Writing Short Course). In what ways does the essential difference between the two kinds of audiences affect the formal elements of the proposal and the strategy for making a persuasive case?
3. Write a 1,000-word memo to your instructor that contains your findings. You might want to review the discussion of comparison and contrast in Chapter 7.
