the story takes place in the heart of the South. Desiree is a young woman who is wed to Armand Aubigny a wealthy plantation owner. Together they had a child with dark complexion from birth. Incredulous Armand declares Desiree to be herself a mixed-race person. She leaves after hearing his order to do so and takes their young child with her.
