Richard Belcher’s book, “The Messiah and the Psalms: Preaching Christ from all the Psalms” explores the relevance and significance of the book of Psalms to the New Testament and the lives of the modern Christians in the 21st Century. According to Belcher, “the Old Testament, its concepts and ideas, find their fulfillment in Christ”. Building on this premise, Belcher attempts to bring out a deeper understanding of relationship of the book of Psalms to Christ. This paper aims to provide an in depth review and reflection on Belcher’s text regarding his assertion that there is a direct link between Psalms and Christ.
The paper is divided into three main sections. The first section provides a summary of Belcher’s approach to Psalms. Section II delves into the weakness and strength of the approach. In section III, a discussion is presented concerning Belcher’s perspective on the use of Psalms 45 as a teaching of Church to exemplify the bride of Christ. The final section explores Psalms 22 in light of the messianic theology.
