This paper will discuss IPV including the definition, different forms of violence/abuse perpetrated, history and social change, who are affected, the consequences, and sociological theories that explain why abusers abuse and why victims stay with their abuser. The research will conclude that abusers use abuse as a form of control due to societal issues. Also, the paper will dismiss the assumption that victims of IPV are weak for not leaving and define societal constraints that make it difficult to do so.
