Feminist Mothering
According to O’Reilly, breaking the known norms and becoming the mother outlaws was one way in which mothers could be able to experience the empowering ability that comes with mothering. Rather than being the self-sacrificing and ever-present parents, mother outlaws encourages women to resist the norms and do things differently (O’Reilly, 2008).
Discourse can be seen as a structure of terms, categories, and statements are found within a social institution. They are meant to display the kind of roles that are played in a patriarchic society. The main message that is constantly being highlighted in a dominant discourse society is that which sees the mother as the person who willingly sacrifices her happiness for that of her family (O’Reilly, 2008).
