A positive environment can influence a student nurse’s perception of the healthcare facility and perhaps their future, (Abonin & Quinbon, 2013). Clinical educators want to place students in an effective environment to allow for the application of theory into practice. Education is the key to personal and professional development._x000D_

A student’s attitude and expectations affect their clinical learning experience. This depends on the attitudes and behaviors that are displayed by staff that in most cases are “teachers” for the theses students. Today, clinical settings are less available than in the past, this is why simulation is the fore-front in teaching clinical skills. Students may be placed in a less desirable environment, with no available options for faculty. It would be a perfect scenario for students to be placed in a perfect setting. In reality, there are none._x000D_

You are always going to find a staff nurse who may be abrupt, nasty, unfriendly and the last thing they want added to their plate is teaching a student. This could be for a variety of reasons such as: heavy workload, staff shortage, staff feeling threatened or lack of teaching skills._x000D_
Relationship between staff and student nurses is an important factor in promoting a positive learning experience.

As nurse educators, we want clinical placement to provide students with the opportunity to observe role models, practice and develop skills with problem-solving abilities, (White, Cartwright & Lottes, 2012). It may not be an ideal clinical site, but as educators we must expose students to different environments and discuss with them ways to help them deal with staff who are not exactly what we call “role models”. Shying them or sheltering them from this “unfriendly behavior” will not prepare them for the “real world”._x000D_

It is important that nursing students show respect and not get into any confrontations. I tell my students always be polite and say thank you for your time, then report the incident to myself or another instructor. I would then approach the situation. Unfortunately, this is not only in nursing but in any filed that requires and internship. I remember when I was a student teacher, I had the worse teacher that I was assigned to. The only thing that we can do is to be respectful and report any unfair treatment. No one should be treated with disrespect whether a student or a teacher._x000D_
