Week 1 Discussion

As stated in our text, “Organizational behavior (OB) is the study of what people think, feel, and do in and around organizations. It looks at employee behavior, decisions, perceptions, and emotional responses. It examines how individuals and teams in organizations relate to each other and to their counterparts in other organizations,” (McShane & Von Glinow, 2015, p. 4). In other words, it an effort to understand how people organize and operate to achieve some goal. During this first week, our objective is to allow you to gain insight to the foundations and importance of this topic and its impact on the organization’s success.

We will begin with a brief historical review that will enable you to gain insights about how OB came about and what was behind its development. We will then look at organizational effectiveness and the importance of understanding the external environment in relation to our organizational efforts. We will then move on to how individual and organization learning is critical to a firm’s success. As globalization continues to accelerate, the need for constant learning is paramount.

During this first week you will be introduced to the impact of diversity and how the managing firm must address not only on a global level but also at the local level. Relationship management is directly tied to the true understanding of cultural diversity. Individual behaviors, personality, and values will be reviewed. Personality characteristics will be explored and you will learn various modeling. As shared in the subject matter this is an important tool to use in order to drive performance improvements.

Finally, ethical behavior will be defined and studied on both the local and global stage. Codes of conduct are being adopted by many global firms. Corporate ethics is a fundamental building block of the plan.Drawing from this week’s readings, discuss each the following:

Exactly why is organizational behavior important to the firm?
How does globalization impact OB structure and practices?
Why do individual values drive organizational effectiveness?
Who should own the OB function within an organization?
Review the gaps you see within in your organization that may be driven by poor OB practices.
