Research

Do a little research to find answers to the following three questions. You can use the Internet. Each answer should be 50 words (longer if you want), but be sure to answer all parts of the question. You must cite the source(s) of your information. Research that is not fully paraphrased and cited will not get credit. Remember you must have at least one source.

Questions:

  1. There are three stages in the writing process: prewriting, writing and revising. On which stage do good writers spend the most time? Why?
  2. What are some common communication channels within an organization? What do you think are the benefits and drawbacks of using email as a channel?
  3. Choose one of the websites that you used to answer the questions above. Explain why you chose that website.

Email

Respond to the following email. Think carefully about your response before you write your message. You may want to do a little bit of research to support your response. Please do try your best to produce a professional email. Also, remember to proofread and edit carefully (always run a spell and grammar checker).

Subject:   Evaluating candidates written communication skills

Hi Maria:

As you know, we will begin interviewing candidates for the Front Office Assistant position next Monday. Because strong communication skills are so essential to this position, I would like to find an effective way to assess our candidates’ written language skills. I’m wondering what some other companies use, or if you have any ideas on how to do this?

Please let me know as soon as possible so we can set something up before our first interview next week.

Thanks,

Liz

CP Task 4.3 (40 points)

CP Task 4.3 consists of TWO parts.

Part 1: PAIBOC Analysis (ungraded)

Read carefully the scenario below.

Expelling Bret Mullens from Tiny Tots Daycare*

You are the owner and director of a successful day-care center. Tiny Tots Daycare started with six children and now enrolls 65 children. The reputation of your center is so good that there is a waiting list of 78 children. Parents are beginning to register their children for your day-care center when they are expecting! As the director and owner of the day-care center, you are now faced with a problem that you have not encountered in your eight years of running it. You must expel a child, and it is your responsibility to write a letter to the child’s parents explaining the reasons for the expulsion and your position.

You need to tell Mr. and Mrs. Mullens that their 4-year-old son, Brett, is being expelled from Tiny Tots. Brett entered the day-care center two months ago and things haven’t been the same since. The child is not able to get along with other children. In his two months at Tiny Tots, he has bitten six children (causing one child to require stitches and a tetanus shot); kicked a teacher; and scratched, hit, and pulled the hair of other children on a regular basis. Seven other parents have threatened to pull their children out of the center if Brett does not leave. You have had several conferences with Brett’s parents but have observed no change in his behavior. Mr. and Mrs. Mullens seem reasonable, and they are obviously concerned about the future of their son. Write a letter to the Mullens to let them know that you must expel Bret. Remember that Brett is their only child, so choose your words carefully.

* Note: This example comes from Phillip D. Thomas, California State University.

You are the owner of Tiny Tots Daycare. You need to write a letter to the parents of Brett Mullens giving them the bad news. This is, of course, a tricky letter to write. Therefore, it is important to do a thorough PAIBOC analysis to determine what information to include in the letter.

Part 2: Email writing (40 points)

Write a letter to the parents of Brett Mullens giving them the bad news.
