Introduction and Conceptual Framework (CH01) Successful management of an increasingly diverse workforce is among the most important global challenges that corporate leaders, human resource managers, and management consultants face. Today’s global economy moves diversity to the top of the agenda. Global demographic trends such as immigration, worker migration, and gender and ethnic differences, continue to dramatically change the composition of the workforce, and there is a growing demand for equal rights for these and other groups such as older adults, people with disabilities, and gays and lesbians. However, the problems of managing today’s diverse workforce do not stem from the heterogeneity of the workforce itself, but rather from the inability of corporate managers to fully comprehend its dynamics, divest themselves of their personal prejudicial attitudes, and effectively, as well as creatively, unleash the potential embedded in a multicultural workforce.

Diversity Legislation in a Global Perspective (CH02) This chapter examines global legislation related to equity and fairness in employment. Indemocratic countries, the laws represent a value system shared by the people. To identify such a shared value system globally, one has to search for a global representative body that can specify a similarly shared value system for all human beings. The United Nations, with all its faults, is the closest to such a representative body. In 1948, the United Nations identified a set of unalienable human rights in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights that was intended to serve as the moral basis for equal rights and antidiscrimination legislation around the world.

Discrimination, Equality, and Fairness in Employment (CH03) The chapter discusses global Affirmative/Positive Action Programs that aim to change rules and provide advantages to groups traditionally discriminated against. Affirmative or Positive ActionPrograms (AAP’s) stand in contrast to the laws reviewed in Chapter 2 since they encouragepositive action (equal and even favorable treatment of certain groups) rather than prohibitnegative treatment (discrimination) in employment. These types of policies go beyond assuring equal rights, and aim to correct past wrongs. In this chapter, different types of discriminationare first discussed as well as theoretical perspectives of discrimination to provide the contextfor these policies. The focus is then turned to describing specific policies in various countries whose aim is to actively promote equality and fairness in employment. The chapter concludes with the public and political debate over these policies and the challenges they pose for business practices.
