Answer the question: What specifically is the benefit to the infant or toddler of a strong partnership between parents and care teachers?

Instructions; Imagine that you are an experienced infant/toddler teacher with a strong working knowledge of the content presented in Module 1 (Brain Development, Social Development, Emotional Development, Attachment, Self-Regulation) and Module 2 (Families and Cultural Context.) A new, inexperienced care teacher has noticed that you put a great deal of time and energy into creating strong partnerships with the families of the children in your care. One day, she asks you, “Why do you spend so much time and energy on the families of your students? I just don’t have the time! When I have a minute to breathe, I take it, or I get just totally exhausted! Besides aren’t the children supposed to be the focus of our time? I think spending time talking to parents, writing notes, making phone calls, and taking pictures for families takes away from my time with the kids. What are the benefits to the infants and toddlers from creating those strong family/care teacher partnerships? Do the kids get anything out of it?”

Your first reaction is to be frustrated with this new teacher, but then you remember that feeling of exhaustion and just not having enough time that comes with being new to the Early Childhood profession. So, you tell her that you would be glad to answer her questions with specific examples of the benefits to the child of strong family/caregiver partnerships. You need some time to reflect on it and prepare specific examples, so you will get back to her in a few days.
